I’m not sure there is much to add when a song is this beautiful and moving. It is one of my favorite praise and worship songs.
When listening to Oceans (Where Feet May Fail), I can’t help but think about when Jesus walked on water (Matthew 14:22-36). There are three important things we need to remember that happened in this miracle.
1. The Storm Was Against Them.
The scripture helps us to understand that the boat was already a considerable distance from land and in the midst of a storm. The wind was against them as they were being tossed by the waves. Despite all their efforts they could not control their boat (life). Doesn’t that sound a lot like what we experience in life. Trying to row back to shore, in their own strength, they were exhausted. Yep, that exactly what we do…try to handle it all in our own strength and then we find ourselves exhausted, frustrated and ready to give up.
2. Jesus Comes During The Storm.
When Jesus saw them, He walked out on the water and when they saw Him they were afraid and thought He was a ghost. Isn’t that just like our flesh…to doubt the Works of God. Yet, there He was when they needed Him most.
As Jesus approached, walking on water, it was symbolic. He wanted them to know that He could, would and did conquer the thing they feared the most at that time which was the raging sea. Your fears are like the raging sea and they come in various forms (life challenges…sickness, family issues, financial problems, doubt, confidence, trust, etc.,). They will draw Jesus near to you but you must not surrender to fear, learn to surrender to Jesus.
When Peter stepped out of the boat he was overcome by fear. Fear is blinding and paralyzing. I know, I’ve seen it, witness it and lived it myself. The bible tells us to “fear not for I am with you (Isaiah 41:10). So that tells me that God knows we have fears but they cannot be allowed to linger in our hearts and minds. If they do, they will conceive and bring forth sin. We must learn to bind every negative thought that enters our mind.
3. Jesus Commanded The Elements (He Is In Control).
Jesus proved He was in command of the elements, something only God can do. Did He do this on purpose? Yes, He revealed His truth to the disciples and the scriptures tell us at that point they accepted, trusted recognized Him as the Son of God (Matthew 14:33). Did you know that Jesus proves Himself to us each and everyday? He starts the moment you and your love ones open their eyes in the morning…that is a miracle and He is in command of life and death.
When you find yourself facing your fears you need to remember that even when the storm is against you, that’s when Jesus shows up and He’ll “walk on water” to get to you because He can and will command any element that may come to steal, kill or destroy you. Jesus will get to you by “any means necessary.” I love it!
